Semester Two

The annual Women in Law Breakfast is the centrepiece of the UNLSA Social Justice portfolio.  At this popular event, University of Newcastle students, staff and members of the local legal profession are invited to discuss and celebrate the role of women in law.

It’s time to get excited for the final social justice event on the 2014 UNLSA Calender! The Sparke Helmore Women in Law Breakfast is back for another year, and it’s shaping up to be the biggest one yet.

The Breakfast is designed to provide an insight into the experiences of prominent women who have worked in the legal profession, celebrating the accomplishments of female law graduates and promoting awareness of the ongoing challenges faced by women in the profession. ALL students, staff and members of the wider legal and local community are invited to attend the event, which will be taking place on Friday 17 October from 7.30am-9am.

This year, we are thrilled to announce that the breakfast will feature a keynote speech from her honour Justice Julie Ward of the New South Wales Court of Appeal. Justice Ward was the first female solicitor to be appointed directly to the bench of the New South Wales Court of Appeal.

The event will be held in the beautiful Link Gallery of the Newcastle Museum, and includes a full sit down plated breakfast. There will be coffee, tea, fruits and breads to share, and an alternating main course of either Eggs Benedict with Cured Ham, Hollandaise Sauce and Grilled Vine Ripened Tomato or Scrambled Eggs, Vine Ripened Tomato & Grilled Bacon. Vegetarian options will be available, so please let us know if you have any dietary requirements at socialjustice@unlsa.com once you have purchased your ticket.

Tickets are $21 (including the online ticket fee) and can be purchased here:

Details about, and pictures of, the venue can be found here:

The swearing in ceremony of Justice Ward, which details her honour’s achievements in great detail, can be found here:

Just because it is a ‘Women in Law Breakfast’ don’t think that all you gentlemen out there are not invited! Bring all your friends and enjoy the coffee and laughs.
