- foster a good relationship between the Association and the legal profession;
- organise academic competitions including mooting competitions, client interviewing competitions and negotiation competitions;
- provide activities for the social recreation of members including the annual Law Ball;
- foster a good relationship between members and staff;
- promote the University of Newcastle School of Law; and
- foster a positive culture and spirit of collegiality among members
UNLSA aims to promote your interests in the field of education. The Education portfolio is designed voice your concerns about educational issues within the University and the wider community, and advocate for better teaching and learning in the Law School. We also aim to help you understand the various career opportunities available, and organise annual Careers events and publications to facilitate this. These include the Careers Roadshow, the Alternative Careers Forum, the Careers Guide, and the Sydney Law Careers Fair. UNLSA's educational competitions are designed to improve your practical skills (and they look great to prospective employees), and put your substantive law knowledge into context. Each year, UNLSA holds competitions in Client Interviewing, Negotiation, Mooting and many more. Our education initiatives do not end with advocacy, careers and competitions. Understanding that hardship and inequalities are common in our community, UNLSA is also active in the areas of Social Justice and Student Support, and we hold an annual Option A/B Seminar to help you decide the right degree program for you. For more information about our education initiatives, visit the Education page.
Social functions, sporting competitions, barbeques, trivia nights, grad dinners and so much more. UNLSA's activities are some of the most talked about on campus, and exist to enhance your experience at law school. Visit the Activities page to find out all about upcoming events and programs!
Each year, UNLSA produces the O Guide for first year students, the Careers Guide, Justitia and a number of ad hoc publications. These publications provide a wealth of information for law students, and provide interesting insights into issues facing the profession and the community. With a new electives program in 2010, UNLSA also aims to reinstate our annual electives guide for 2011 - to help students make the right decision when faced with so many new elective options. For more information, visit the Publications page.
If you started law after 2006, you will need to renew your membership annually. UNLSA holds membership drives in the first few weeks of Semester 1, and year representatives will be signing up both new and old members during this time. Membership is $5 per year and entitles you to free or discounted entry to all social events, social justice forums and barbeques; free registration for all our competitions; free copies of all our publications, access to advocacy and student support services, the opportunity to play in our social sporting teams, and so much more. For more information on how you can become a member, and the services available to members, please contact your year representative or Vice President (Administration). Don't know your year representative? Visit the Committee Members page!
UNLSA holds annual elections for committee and executive positions at our Annual General Meeting in September. We also hold elections for vacant positions throughout the year. Stay tuned to our homepage, Law School Linkup and Blackboard so you don't miss out on any election-related announcements.
