Hone your legal skills by entering in a UNLSA competition. Join as a team or enter in one of our solo comps. From presenting essays to making vigorous cross examinations, there’s sure to be something for you.

All Competitions

Mooting

The most iconic law school competition of the lot. Mooting lets competitors develop their legal analysis skills as well as their public speaking. You’ll prepare an appeal against a lower court decision, and argue your case in front on a judge. Mooting is a great way to get better at thinking on your feet, you’ll have to make your argument whilst deconstructing the arguments of your opponents

Witness Examination

Are you the next Terracini or Tedeschi? Or do you really just want to yell “Did you order the code red!” at someone. The UNLSA Witness Examination competition is the perfect way to practice your courtroom advocacy skills. You’ll undertake examination and cross examination, develop a case theory and work out how to get the answers you need from a witness whilst adhering to the laws of evidence.

Client Interviewing

The UNLSA Client Interviewing competition helps students gain essential skills for legal practice. Knowing what questions to ask a client, how to ask them, and how to deal with difficult or confused clients is a key part of a lawyers day-to-day work. No matter what legal field or industry you want to work in after university, many of the skills gained in the client interviewing competition will be useful.

Negotiation

The negotiation competition is a great way to develop your advocacy skills outside of a courtroom setting. Come prepared to defend your clients position in order to get them the best possible outcome. You’ll compete against another student, with instructions that you won’t know. Use your intuition and negotiating skills to seal the deal for your client.

The UNLSA also runs a specific first year negotiation competition, designed to get new students comfortable with law school competitions.

Intervarsity Competitions

The UNLSA also competes against other Universities in a variety of intervarsity competitions. These competitions are a great way for UNLSA members to connect with, and build on the skills of, students from other universities

Generally the UNLSA selects it’s intervarsity teams from among students who have competed at a high level in UNLSA competitions.

Our teams have frequently performed well at intervaristy competitions, most recently at the Australian Law Students’ Association conference in Hobart, where two UNLSA teams won first prize.
